Racism in Britain: the time for denial is over | Letters

Guardian - ons, 05/08/2020 - 18:30

Readers respond to an interview with the footballer Danny Rose in which he recounted the racism he has suffered, and to the Guardian’s Young, British and Black interviews with 50 of those behind the UK’s anti-racism protests in recent months

In the context of Black Lives Matter, I have read little that is more shameful and quietly eloquent than your interview with Danny Rose (Tottenham’s Danny Rose tired of police stopping him to ask if car is stolen, 3 August). Danny is right: nothing will change, because sexism and racism seem so ingrained in some institutions as to be hardly worthy of notice. After all, institutional racism does not exist in the Metropolitan police according to its commissioner, Cressida Dick, nor elsewhere according to some government advisers.

Let us imagine that Harry Kane, say, was stopped, searched and breathalysed, with no proper cause, or questioned on the propriety of his sitting in a first-class carriage – it would be front-page news and the commentariat would be up in arms.

Tottenham's Danny Rose tired of police stopping him to ask if car is stolen

Guardian - man, 03/08/2020 - 20:28
  • England player opens up on experiences off the pitch
  • ‘I just give up with hoping that things will change’

Danny Rose has said he is regularly stopped by police in his car and questioned in various scenarios that would not happen if he were a white man as he detailed his anger and exasperation at racism in the UK.

The Doncaster-born Tottenham defender, who has spent the second half of the season on loan at Newcastle, has been racially abused on the field, most recently when playing for England in Montenegro in March 2019. He had suffered similarly on England under-21 duty in Serbia in October 2012 and in the wake of the incident in Montenegro said he could not wait to walk away from the game because he was so disgusted by the racism that blights it – and the authorities’ response to it.

Football transfer rumours: Watford captain Troy Deeney to Tottenham?

Guardian - man, 03/08/2020 - 10:01

Strap in for some speculation as the Rumour Mill returns

Cranking into long overdue activity once again after months of eerie silence, the Rumour Mill resumes business with intriguing speculation that Troy Deeney has piqued interest at White Hart Lane. After Watford’s relegation to the Championship, the long-serving captain hinted that his association with the club might have reached its conclusion and over the weekend it was suggested that he could be brought to White Hart Lane to act as back-up for Harry Kane. With one year left on his contract at Watford, it is reported an initial loan move for the 32-year-old has been discussed, with a view to a more permanent deal depending on how often he gets on the end of long balls booted in his general direction from the back by Toby Alderweireld.

Premier League 2019-20 fans’ verdicts, part two: Manchester City to Wolves

Guardian - søn, 02/08/2020 - 09:00

Fans review the season, and set out their transfer wishlists
Part one: Arsenal to Liverpool

A strange season. Whether it’s judged as a success or not will depend on the Champions League. Winning the Carabao Cup again was great, but nine league losses is unforgivable for this City team, and the less said about the FA Cup semi the better. The decision not to sign a replacement for Kompany last summer was a huge error: the club needs to get the squad composition right for next season. Pep didn’t get much wrong, but could have blooded García and Foden earlier in the season.
